Metso is €3.9 billion provider of technology, automation, and services to the mining, construction, and oil & gas industries, with more than 16,000 employees in 50 countries. At a recent SAP Conference in Europe, Krista Männistö discussed the company’s key learnings in the adoption of automated business process validation to ensure business process quality across their enterprise systems.
To date, Metso has automated the validation of 45 end-to-end business processes, including 182 transactional processes and 3,981 process steps in these business processes.
Dramatic reduction in manual effort. Metso identified that automation is approximately 97% faster than their prior manual approach to quality assurance. They use Worksoft Certify® together with SAP Solution Manager to achieve these dramatic results.
Risk mitigation benefits. “A key learning of the project has been to understand how important testing truly is in order to deliver (technology) changes to the production environment in a safe manner. We only now came to realize how unreliable and unrepeatable earlier manual testing results have been. This has caused a huge risk in our way of operating with change management and also delayed the end-to-end lead time of change requests,” said Männistö
Increased agility and competitiveness. “Test automation will make internal processes more flexible and improves productivity by releasing time and resources for other more productive work than manual testing. Testing could be performed more frequently and whenever needed. This creates more agility to respond to business requirements and increases our competitiveness,” noted Männistö.
Automation Objectives. In the next year, Metso’s objectives are to (1) automate 80% to 90% of their end-to-end business process validation, and (2) move to “lights-out” testing over-night for daily business process validation of their enterprise systems. They are well on their way!
