ASUG Survey Reports Why Users Are Hesitant
to Engage Automated Testing for SAP


Automation can reap significant benefits for efficiency and cost savings, but knowing what to automate and how to set up those processes is a challenge for SAP customers. A recently published ASUG Insights report reveals survey responses that indicate why SAP users are hesitant to implement automation or use it to the fullest extent.

Here we unpack five of those concerns and share how the Worksoft Connective Automation Platform is different by design, making it the top choice for automating SAP among the world’s largest enterprises.

1. Build Time

Nearly three-quarters of respondents cite concerns with setting up automation as a challenge with 72% reporting that they fear that the time required to build and maintain automation systems would be an issue. That’s wasted time, energy and costs,” said one of Worksoft’s enterprise customers in the manufacturing space. “You want to be able to use that script over and over again. 3. Automation Coverage

Roughly half of all SAP customers rely on manual testing exclusively. The ASUG Insights study reports that “not only is the number of SAP customers using automated testing too low, but of the organizations that are using automated testing, they are not using it enough. A whopping 74% are automating less than half of their SAP testing. Of that 74%, 40% are automating less than 25%.”

All of the concerns and roadblocks identified in the study can contribute to the tyranny of lower expectations where automation is used sparingly at best, failing to deliver much return on investment.

“For automation to be successful long term, you need to build lots of it and use it to solve complex problems that are meaningful to the business,” said Shoeb Javed, Chief Product & Strategy Officer for Worksoft in his recent chapter on Self-Healing Automation in Sogeti’s State of AI Applied to Quality Engineering report.

Understanding what to automate can be a challenge and 46% say identifying eligible areas to automate is a barrier to implementing automation. Historically, there has been a fair amount of guesswork involved in selecting the right processes to automate. Some organizations choose routine, simple tasks to automate. While those may be the most straightforward, they’re unlikely to yield the ROI most leaders expect from automation investments. In fact, identifying tangible gains from automation, both potential and realized, has been a challenge for organizations seeking to implement automation.
